Milkweed - from field to finished product

Field experience with an atypical crop

Farmer and machinist, I have been exploring for nearly 12 years the practical feasibility of milkweed as a textile fiber — from field to finished product.

My work is grounded in experimentation, equipment development, and a deliberate vertical integration approach, built step by step.

Through ASCLÉPIA FIBRES & CO., I document this process: field observations, technical innovations, and practical applications, guided by a principle of mastery before expansion.

About

Coming from both an agricultural and technical background, I have worked as a grain farmer and machinist. This dual expertise led me to address concrete, field-based challenges related to the feasibility of a marginal and complex crop, at multiple levels: cultivation practices, mechanization, operational constraints, equipment adaptation, process optimization, and ultimately the development of finished products.

This experience has shaped a pragmatic approach to innovation, grounded in observation, experimentation, and the design of functional solutions tested under real-world conditions.

My work is rooted in a detailed understanding of agricultural and mechanical systems, with particular attention to reliability, simplicity, and operational efficiency—both technically and practically.

Through my writings and projects, I also share insights and reflections on the pursuit of a coherent and sustainable economic model for milkweed. I address the agronomic, technical, logistical, and economic challenges inherent to this plant, as well as the conditions that must be met before this fiber can reasonably be considered industrial.

Asclépia Fibres & Co.

Asclépia Fibres & Co. develops and processes milkweed fiber (Asclepias syriaca) through an integrated, technical, and rigorous approach.

Our work is based on a comprehensive understanding of the plant: its cultivation, agronomic management, mechanized harvesting, fiber extraction, and conditioning.

We operate with a focus on mastery rather than volume.

A Demanding Plant, A Singular Material

Milkweed is a North American perennial with remarkable insulating properties.
Its hollow, lightweight, and naturally hydrophobic fiber gives it genuine technical potential.

However, its cultivation involves specific constraints:

  • Variable establishment depending on soil conditions

  • Specific agronomic management requirements

  • A short harvest window, intensified by frost

  • Fluctuating yields

  • Agricultural coexistence challenges when not properly managed

  • Variability in senescence within and between fields

  • Fiber fragility

  • Logistical challenges distinct from other textile fibers

Our positioning acknowledges these realities.

We favor a measured and documented approach over simplified narratives.

Vertical Integration and Traceability

Asclépia Fibres & Co. relies on:

  • Fields cultivated and monitored over multiple years

  • Harvesting and extraction equipment developed in-house

  • Control of the value chain, from seed to processed fiber

This integration enables:

  • Clear traceability

  • Consistent quality

  • A precise understanding of technical parameters

  • Economic viability grounded in ongoing agronomic research and practical understanding

  • Respect for the balance between ecological discourse and the realities and risks of agricultural systems

A Fiber in Its Proper Context

We do not present milkweed as a universal solution.

Environmental impact is a consequence, not a promise.

We consider this fiber a specialized natural material, whose relevance depends on the intended application.

Our objective is to develop applications where its properties are genuinely suitable, particularly in:

  • High-value natural insulation materials

  • Natural fiber blends

  • The valorization of by-products

We work collaboratively with partners who share a pragmatic and responsible approach.

A Method Rooted in Rigor

Our vision is based on:

  • Agronomic mastery

  • Technical validation

  • Application coherence

  • Respect for the agricultural community

Asclépia Fibres & Co. positions itself as a specialized, independent, and methodical actor in the development of milkweed fiber.

Tailored Services

I offer to work collaboratively with companies, engineers, and research teams in the development of technical solutions related to bio-based materials. My focus lies in bridging theoretical expertise and field experience, confronting concepts with the real-world constraints of use, manufacturing, and operation.

I approach these projects through a co-development framework: analyzing challenges, testing hypotheses, prototyping, and iteratively refining solutions, with the objective of delivering technically viable and operationally sound outcomes.
